Clove gets its name from the French word which means 'to nail', referring to the shape of this one of 'the big four' spices. Historians claim that Clove was one of the first spices to be traded. This dates back to almost 1721 BC. It is also documented in Chinese history in 226 BC where the emperor commanded that anyone who wished to meet with him chew on a Clove beforehand to eliminate bad breath. The spice was used during the Middle Ages to cover up for the sour and bitter tastes of the food that was poorly preserved.
The Clove tree is native to the Malucca Islands, a cluster which is now part of Indonesia. Some chroniclers believe that one of these islands named Amboina is most likely the exact birthplace of the tree. When the Dutch overtook the colonialization of the islands; they attempted monopolizing the Clove trade. In an effort to do so, they went on to destroy Clove trees which were not part of their territory. In the process, they overstepped the tradition of the locals who planted a Clove tree each time a child was born in the area. This malignant behaviour also crushed the symbolism between the tree and the child. However, the idea to monopolize the trade was not successful and by the 18th century, Clove trees were cultivated in places like Zanzibar, Madagascar, Brazil, Pakistan, Mauritius, Ternate, Tidor and Tanzania among others. The plant also had deep roots in India. With so many countries and islands producing Clove, the production increased and the rarity of the spice dropped. Thus it became more affordable for the people of all classes to consume for culinary and medicinal purposes. The spice has been used in Asia as a cooking spice for over 2000 years now and in India as a primary healer for cavities. One of the main components of the Clove Essential Oil is Eugenol. This controls acne breakage in the skin. Its anti-oxidant, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties have inspired its use in cosmetics, bath washes, shampoos, massage oils, and more.
