The term Eucalyptus comes from 'Eu' and 'Kalypto' means 'well' and 'covered' in Greek, owing to the cup-like membrane that covers the flower bud. The Australian Aborigines were the first to use the plant's leaves to heal wounds. They called it 'Kino'. The origin of Eucalyptus for medicinal use has a story that goes as follows. An English settler had once accidentally cut his hand with an axe. His father suggested that he dress the wound with bound Eucalyptus leaves around the stitched cut - an Aboriginal folk medicine method. The surgeon who later examined the cut finger was impressed with the speedy recovery and absence of any infection. Stories like this soon spread across Australia which led to producing Eucalyptus Oil commercially by Pharmacists. The first oil of this plant that was exported to England was called 'Sydney Peppermint', due to its camphorous smell, cooling and soothing effect on the muscles and wounds; similar to that of Peppermint, only more effective. Biologically, Eucalyptus trees consume a lot of water while growing and are often been used to clear water-logged land including swamps where malaria mosquitos are prevalent. However, this does not impact the quality of the oil. The primary components of this oil are α-Terpineol, 1,8-cineole (Eucalyptol), α-pinene, β-pinene, Sabinene, Camphene, Limonene, p-Cymene, Camphor, Globulol, Citronellal, α-phellandrene, Aromadendrene, and Piperitone. α-Terpineol exhibits anti-fungal, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. 1,8-Cineole is anti-spasmodic, analgesic, it increases blood flow and reduces tension headaches. Pinene acts as a bronchodilator. Sabinene is anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-microbial. Camphor is warming, antitussive, absorbent, cooling, anesthetic, anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory. Globullol is regenerative. Citronellol is anti-convulsant. Aromadrene is a disinfectant and helps support the treatment of infections besides being anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Piperitone acts as a decongestant. Cosmetically, Eucalyptus Essential Oil nourishes hair, moisturizes an itchy scalp and removes dandruff flakes. It can even eliminate lice. The oil is a great choice to soothe skin irritations, heal wounds, cuts, and burns. Added to warm baths, the oil rejuvenates stiff and sore muscles which is why it is picked for aromatherapy too.
