What Is Acne?

There are many tiny holes on your skin surface which get clogged with oil, dirt, dead skin cells and bacteria that leads to the development of pimples or zits on your skin surface. If this condition persists for a longer period of time then this skin condition is known as acne. Acne is usually common among teenagers and occurs in adolescence. But adults can also have acne.

What Are The Types Of Acne

When the pores become plugged with oil/sebum, dirt and dead skin cells, then it gives rise to a skin condition called acne. Acne may be classified into 2 types

1. Non-Inflammatory

When excess oil, dead skin cells and dirt clogs the pores, then they are known as comedones. Blackheads and Whiteheads are known as comedones which are commonly visible on your forehead, chin, nose and cheeks. These are examples of Non-Inflammatory Acne. Blackheads are open comedones and whiteheads are closed comedones.

2. Inflammatory

Inflammatory acne can be painful and it can occur on any part of the body. It can occur on the forehead, chest, neck, back, arms, buttocks. The inflammation is caused because of a response from the immune system of your body, which is initiated when your body perceives a threat. Here, your body perceives the bacteria as a threat. When your pores become inflamed, it leads to redness and swelling of that particular area. Papule which is a closed lesion on the skin is a type of inflammatory acne as it causes redness and swelling in that area. Another type is the pustule, which occurs when the papule ruptures. Nodules and cyst are also examples of inflammatory acne. The inflammatory acne ruptures on the surface of the skin and leaves behind scars, dark spots and blemishes on the skin.

The Severity Of Each Type Of Acne

The mildest form of acne is the formation of blackheads and whiteheads as they are not painful. These can be cleared with topical application of products like skin cleansers with salicylic acid or toners. Retinoids are also considered to be effective in treating acne.

Pustules and papules are considered to be the moderate forms of acne. They may sometimes get cured with OTC medication. If you have moderate acne which is spread out in a larger area, you may be required to consult a dermatologist.

Nodules and cysts are the most severe form of acne which are quite painful. Picking or popping the nodules or the cysts can lead to scars.

It is always advisable to consult a dermatologist to figure which type of acne you have and start the medication depending upon the type and severity of the acne.

What Are The Causes Of Acne?

When the pores of your skin become clogged with sebum, dead skin cells or bacteria then the condition is known as Acne. Each pore of the surface of your skin is an opening which lies embedded on the dermal layer of your skin. The sebaceous gland releases sebum, which paves its way through the hair, to the pore and reaches on the surface on the skin. The sebum helps to keep your skin well moisturized, soft and smooth. When this mechanism of the skin gets disturbed then it gives rise to acne. Below mentioned can be few reasons which can aggravate the occurrence of acne on your skin

  • Excess of sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands which get trapped inside the pores.
  • Dead skin cells get accumulated in your pores.
  • A bacterial build-up in your pores.

The above-mentioned reasons can contribute to the development of pimples on your skin. If anyone of these conditions occur frequently, then it is known as Acne.

Risk Factors Associated With Acne

There are many factors that contribute towards the occurrence of Acne on your skin. Some people believe that eating fast food and junk food can lead to acne, though it is not scientifically proved. However, there are certain factors which are responsible for acne, they are

  • Hormonal changes caused during adolescence or pregnancy.
  • Use of certain medication such as birth control pills or corticosteroids.

What Are The Skincare Mistakes That Can Worsen The Acne?

When To See A Doctor

  2. Acne may persist for several years in women which flares up a week before menstruation. This type of acne does not need any treatment as it subsides automatically in women who use contraceptives.
  3. In older people, a sudden increase in severe acne might be a signal of underlying health issues which may require medical attention.

Certain non prescribed acne lotions, cleansers and other skin products can cause a serious reaction. This type of reaction is quite rare, but immediately seek medical assistance if you experience any of the following symptoms after using such skincare products.

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Numbness
  • Swelling of the eyes, face, lips or tongue
  • Tightness of the throat
